About us


GFBiochemicals is the only company to produce levulinic acid at commercial scale directly from biomass. The company was co-founded in 2008 by Pasquale Granata and Mathieu Flamini.

Our founders worked closely with a group of biobased chemical experts to find sustainable alternatives to oil-based products across a range of market sectors. Together, they developed the production technology needed for this revolution in chemicals and biofuels. In partnership with the University of Pisa and the Polytechnic University of Milan, the technology’s potential was demonstrated by the Caserta plant which has been retrofitted with new conversion, recovery and purification technology.

GFBiochemicals expects substantial growth in the levulinic acid market coming years and production at Caserta is to be scaled up to 10,000 MT/a by 2017.

In February 2016, GFBiochemicals acquired Segetis, the leading producer of levulinic acid derivatives, in a move towards downstream integration. This acquisition marked a transformational step for GFBiochemicals enabling the combined business to create high-value derivatives from levulinic acid produced using GFBiochemicals’ patented technology. Segetis provides GFBiochemicals with a market-leading brand and unique intellectual property composed of over 50 patents and over 200 pending patent applications worldwide, as well as a production plant located in Minnesota.

Caserta production plant: innovation and R&D

Levulinic acid produced by GFBiochemicals' technology is sourced from abundant renewable feedstocks. Given GFBiochemicals' flexibility in inputs, biomass from a variety of sources can be converted.

GFBiochemicals also plans to expand its product portfolio to additional high-value levulinic acid derivatives. The derivatives will be developed at the company’s Caserta production site to accelerate downstream market introduction.
